Here’s everything you need to know about the afrobeats sensation KiDi

After winning the MTN Hitmaker competition in 2015, KiDi stays winning and producing hit after hit.

The young Ghanaian musician only started singing professionally four years ago, but has already won awards and performed in other parts of the world outside Ghana.

Here is what you need to know about him…

KiDi Real Name

KiDi was born Dennis Nana Dwamena.

Although his stage name is KiDi, he says he prefers to be called Dwamena, the first name that he used when he started singing. But, as his music grew, he changed to KiDi.

KiDi said he is a very shy, reserved guy, who prefers to be in his corner. Explaining what his stage name means, KiDi said it is the name of a musical instrument.

“KiDi means rhythm, and KiDi is a name of a drum, a very loud drum,” he told Pulse Chat.

He added that “we were looking for a name when I started singing and wanted a name that meant something.”

As a young boy he was called Justin Bieber, but the musician says he hated the name.

KiDi Age

KiDi celebrates his birthday on the 18th of August every year. He was born in 1993.

KiDi Family

KiDi’s parents’ names are Gerald and Beatrice Thompson. His father sadly died when he was 7 years old.

In an interview with Delay Show, KiDi revealed the traumatic event he suffered seeing his dad being beaten up by armed robbers.

He said the intruders hit his dad so bad that he became ill afterwards. The illness ultimately led to his death.

Speaking about his childhood, he noted it was not easy

“My father had four women in all, and my mother was the third. I believe things would have been different if I had lived with my parents and siblings under one roof. But who knows, perhaps if I had lived with them, they would have pampered me and I would not even get to where I am now. So I believe it’s all good,” KiDi told Delay Show.

His younger brothers are Phillip and Elliot. The young musician is very close to his mother and says she is his biggest supporter when it comes to his music career. In an interview with Nayoka Oware, he said the first time he sang was at church, and his mother threw money at him in excitement.

KiDi attended the University of Ghana Legon. He obtained a degree in Economics and Information Studies, but the star says he has no plans to quit music in order to pursue a career in Economics.

He graduated in 2016.

KiDi Girlfriend

KiDi has always been called a lady’s man.

However, the star claims that he is “very single”. He, however, prefers older woman.

“Personally, growing up I used to have all these ideas of what I want my woman to look like, but then you grow up and realise that these things don’t matter,” he said in an interview with Pulse Chat.

He says as long as the woman has “a vibe, you have a pretty face, first of all, you have some common sense that you can use to function that’s all it takes,” he said.

“We have to have that chemistry, that vibe,” said the star.

He says the reason he likes older women is because of their maturity.

“In a perfect world, ideally, I’d love to date an older woman. It doesn’t mean that if someone younger comes my way and everything else checks I’ll say no I want an older woman. It is just in a perfect world, ideal world that is who I’d want,” he said.

“Their maturity is quite attractive,” he added.

KiDi Music

KiDi became famous after winning Hitmaker competition.

“Before Hitmaker I was very very sceptical about joining reality shows. We all know what happens in reality shows in Ghana at that time. I mean anybody who goes to reality shows and win, nothing really comes of it,” he said in an interview with Pulse Chat.

He says he didn’t really want to join, but was persuaded by someone to join. As the saying goes, the rest is history. KiDi went on to win the competiton.

KiDi’s popularity grew from the time he was in university. He used to perform on Moonlight Café platforms for underground artistes. While studying Economics and Information Studies at the University of Ghana, KiDi’s love for music led him to perform and record covers for popular songs.

KiDi Controversy

On the 20th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music awards night, Kidi won the ‘Best Male Vocal Performer of the Year award,Was designated to present the ‘Discovery of the Year award to Wendy Shay.

However, when Wendy Shay got on the sage to accept her award, she gave KiDi a hug, but the look on her face seemed to tell a story and it was not happiness. In the video, just after Wendy Shay completed hugging Kidi, she quickly pouted in an attempt to cover her nose.

Now this clearly could have meant two things. She could have been saying that KiDi has a bad breath or she just doesn’t like KiDi.

In an interview with Happy FM’s DJ Advicer, Kidi revealed: “Initially, I had someone [King Promise] on the song. But with the controversies surrounding the song, his management had to step back because they did not want their artiste to be caught up in this back and forth”.

Although he was initially disappointed, KiDi did explain that he understood and accepted the decision that was taken by King Promise’s management as any label would look out for their artist. However, KiDi still wishes to collaborate with King Promise.
